To keep Yetunde safe and to ensure that all users are at least 18 years old, we may ask you to provide verification data, which can include:
A photograph or scan of a government-issued identity document, such as:
National ID card (e.g. NIN/NIMC card)
Passport
Other national or state ID documents that clearly display your name, photograph, and date of birth
A selfie (a photograph of your face)
In some cases, a selfie holding your ID close to your face, so that both your face and the document are visible
In addition, we process:
The date of birth and other profile information you provide during sign-up
Technical data about the verification process (for example, whether an automated check has passed or failed and the failure reason)
We use third-party identity and image-processing providers to help us perform these checks. These providers receive your images only for the purpose of providing verification services to us and are required to keep them secure.
Verification data may be collected when:
You are prompted in the Yetunde app to take a photo of your ID and/or a selfie using your device’s camera
You agree to proceed with verification using our automated identity verification flow
You consent to a manual review after automated checks have failed or are inconclusive
For automated checks, your images are sent securely from the app to our servers and, where applicable, to our verification providers for real-time processing.
We use your verification data to:
Confirm that you meet our minimum age requirement (18+)
Confirm, to a reasonable standard, that the person in the selfie matches the person shown on the ID document
Help detect and prevent:
Fake or duplicate accounts
Use of stolen or forged identity documents
Underage use of the service
Other fraudulent or abusive activity on the platform
Maintain a safer environment for all users on Yetunde
Where our automated systems are unable to reliably read or verify your ID (for example, because the date of birth is obscured by background patterns or shadows), we may offer you the option of a manual verification. In that case, trained members of our team will review your ID and selfie (and, if applicable, your selfie holding your ID) to make a decision.
We do not use your verification images for marketing or advertising.
Where Nigeria data protection law applies, our legal bases for processing verification data include:
Legitimate interests – We have a legitimate interest in:
Ensuring that users are at least 18 years old
Protecting our users and the wider community from fraud, impersonation, and harmful conduct
Maintaining the safety and integrity of our platform
Compliance with legal obligations – In some jurisdictions we may be required by law or regulatory guidance to implement age verification or other identity checks.
In certain circumstances, and where required by law, we may also rely on your consent (for example, where you expressly agree to proceed with a manual review and the upload of specific documents).
We apply the principles of data minimisation and storage limitation to verification data:
• Automated verification
ID and selfie images used for automated checks are processed in real time and are not stored by us beyond what is technically necessary to perform the check and return a result.
Manual verification
Where automated checks fail or are inconclusive and you choose to proceed with a manual review, we temporarily store your ID and selfie images (and any selfie holding your ID) while your manual review is pending.
Once a manual reviewer has approved or rejected your verification, we delete the images from our systems and keep only a record of the verification decision (for example, the outcome, the date of review, and reviewer notes).
If your account is later closed or deleted, we will handle any remaining verification-related records in line with our general retention rules and any applicable legal requirements.
Access to verification data is strictly limited:
• Automated checks are performed by:
Our own systems; and/or
Our third-party verification providers, who act as processors on our behalf and are contractually bound to use your data only for verification purposes and to keep it secure.
• Manual review is carried out only by a small number of trained staff with appropriate access rights. These team members are bound by confidentiality obligations and internal policies on data protection and security.
Verification images are never shared with other users and are not used for public display.
Verification data is processed on servers we control and/or on cloud infrastructure operated by third-party service providers.
These servers may be located inside or outside Nigeria. Where required by applicable law, we will take appropriate steps to ensure that your verification data remains protected in line with this Privacy Policy when it is processed in other countries.
You may choose not to provide verification data. However:
Yetunde is a service strictly for users who are 18 or older, and
If we cannot verify your age or identity to a reasonable standard, we may not be able to provide you with access to some or all features of the app, and we may suspend or restrict your account.
You may also have certain rights in relation to your personal data under applicable data protection laws (for example, rights of access, correction, deletion or objection). You can exercise these rights by contacting us using the contact details provided in this Privacy Policy. We may need to verify your identity before responding to certain requests.
We retain your data for as long as your account is active or necessary to provide our services.
Upon account deletion, we remove or anonymize your personal data except where retention is required for:
Compliance with law.
Resolving disputes.
Safety and moderation enforcement (e.g., evidence of fraud, sextortion, or minors).
Moderation-related evidence is stored securely and only as long as necessary for legal and safety obligations.
Your data may be processed and stored in countries outside your residence (e.g., where our hosting or service providers are located).
We implement safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) or equivalent mechanisms to ensure adequate data protection.
Yetunde is strictly for users aged 18 and above.
We do not knowingly collect or allow data from minors.
If we discover under-18 use, we will:
Suspend the account.
Delete all personal data.
Retain only evidence of misrepresentation necessary for compliance and safety obligations.
We use automated tools to:
Detect suspicious behavior (e.g., fraud, impersonation, sextortion).
Enforce Community Guidelines (e.g., warnings, suspensions, bans).
Prioritize urgent safety issues (e.g., minors or exploitation reports).
